Vocational Elective Programs

In addition to traditional academic programs, instruction is provided in Cosmetology/Barbering , Culinary Arts, Woodworking, Automotive Technology, as well as Hydroponics, Horticulture & Landscape Design . 

Cosmetology & Barbering

The goal is to get students to link Cosmetology with self-esteem and success. In class students will work on mannequins, and each other to build their confidence and have hands on experience. The students learn haircutting/barbering, hair color, braiding, curling/flat ironing, pins curls, sew-in weaves, make-up, nails and much more!

Culinary Arts

The Culinary staff and students produce and supervise breakfast and lunch for all students as well as staff on a daily basis. We are extremely excited about this endeavor, as it provides us an opportunity to train and further educate our students in all aspects of the food service industry- such as serve safe, inventory, ordering, institutional cooking as well as portion control. Lastly, students will have the opportunity to learn an array of techniques and skills utilized in restaurants and commercial kitchens to help prepare them for future job opportunities.

Woodworking

Wood Shop will introduce students to the Art of Cabinet and Furniture making with emphasis on safety, time management and quality. Students will design, plan and construct at least one major project during the marking period.

They will learn and understand the use of hand tools, portable power tools and stationary power equipment. Materials will include solid lumber, sheet goods and also metal and plastic. 

Students will learn to work solo, and also in a group as they will in future employment.

Hydroponics, Horticulture & Landscape Design

As we move forward to spring and summer our landscaping students are preparing for various projects around the school.  We are getting ready to prepare our 1600sf vegetable garden as students will learn how to start vegetables from seeds, how to prepare a garden and maintain it throughout the growing season.   Classes are learning how to install/plant vegetables in containers and specific areas while practicing how to properly water vegetables and monitor them for any issues.

 Our class will also be working on small projects around the school from building several small fieldstone walls, to installing a 8x8 greenhouse, fixing a koi pond and planting various shrubs on the property.  Part of the program will introduce students to a variety of farm animals ranging from adult chickens laying eggs to rabbits and small chicks.  In the fall EVS will be expanding our animals and introduce some pigs, goats and sheep.  

Students will also be introduced to various landscaping equipment from, hand tools to power equipment and mowing machines.

We are also busy setting up and maintaining our hydroponic lab to grow herbs and vegetables.  Students will understand the main functions of hydroponics and how to grow and maintain the various systems.

Automotive Technology

This course provides an introduction to the principles of automotive repair, maintenance, and safety. Students will learn how to identify, diagnose, and repair common automotive problems, as well as gain an understanding of the function and operation of various automotive systems. The course covers topics such as engine repair, electrical systems, brakes, steering and suspension. Students will also learn about basic automotive tools and equipment, as well as safety practices in the automotive shop. Through hands-on activities and practical exercises, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for success in the automotive industry.

Course Goals:

  • Develop an understanding of the principles and theories behind automotive repair and maintenance

  • Develop proficiency in the use of basic automotive tools and equipment

  • Understand safety practices in the automotive shop

  • Develop the ability to diagnose and repair common automotive problems

  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills through hands-on activities and practical exercises

  • Prepare students for entry-level positions in the automotive industry or for further study in automotive technology.
