Academics
Essex Valley School's curriculum is aligned to the NJ State Department of Education's Core Curriculum Content Standards. The School is a member of the National Honor Society. A cooperative arrangement with Essex County Community College enables EVS students to earn college credit for Foundations of Math and Foundations of English courses taken at EVS during their senior year. EVS offers an extensive, flexible curriculum, including Foreign Language as well as Driver's Ed classes and coordinates with the sending district's credit requirements, state testing accommodations & two elective choices each semester.
Transition Planning
Additionally, students’ transition planning needs are met in collaboration with EVS’s Cooperative Education Coordinator. Following referral to the CEC, students may utilize the New Jersey Career Assistance Navigator (NJCAN) to begin educational and career planning, as well as more immediate job exploration and placement. Students develop both short and long-term goals within a career action plan, as they work to create resumés and build interviewing skills in preparation for opportunities for employment.

​With the assistance of school staff, students have been placed in both internship and part-time employment positions in such establishments as The Original Pancake House, West Caldwell Care Center, Bed Bath and Beyond, and many more. Ongoing community outreach is a goal of the Transition Planning program - nurturing cooperative relationships with businesses in the community allows our students to continue to develop their real-world talents and abilities.

Essex Valley School's Transition Planning program also provides students with the opportunity to explore post-secondary educational programs, such as college and vocational schooling. Students work with the school's transition coordinator and their counselor to develop necessary skills during their high school career that will enable them to pursue and achieve their goals following graduation.

Throughout the school year students are provided with the opportunity to attend career fairs and field trips to various vocational or job training programs, as well as to local county college campuses. These visits assist students in evaluating which settings and surroundings most inspire them and support them in meeting their post-high school goals. The Transition Planning program is truly the key to each student achieving a successful post-secondary outcome.
ESY-Extended School Year
An Extended School Year program is available for students as indicated by their Individual Educational Program. The program is in session during the month of July.
